What this site does

Is Shabbat Out Yet? calculates whether Shabbat (the Jewish day of rest) is currently in progress at a given location. To do this, the site needs to know a geographic location.

How location is determined

When you visit the site, your IP address is used by our hosting provider (Vercel Inc.) to estimate your approximate geographic location (city and country). This location is used solely to calculate Shabbat times. Your IP address is not stored by us.

You may also manually select a city. The selected city is saved in your browser's local storage so the site remembers your choice on future visits. This data never leaves your device.

What we collect

We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand how visitors use the site (page views, visitor counts). This analytics solution is privacy-focused and does not use cookies or track individual users across sites. We do not collect any personal data beyond anonymous usage statistics. There are no user accounts, no tracking pixels, and no advertising.

Data processing

• IP geolocation: Your IP address is processed by Vercel's edge network to derive approximate latitude, longitude, city, and country. This happens in memory during your request and is not logged or stored by us. The legal basis for this processing is legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) — the geolocation is necessary for the site to function.
• Web Analytics: Vercel Web Analytics collects anonymous usage data (page views, referring sites, and general visitor counts) without using cookies or tracking individual users. No personal information is collected. Data is processed by Vercel Inc. in accordance with their privacy policy.
• Local storage: Your selected city (name, country, latitude, longitude) is stored in your browser's local storage with a 24-hour expiry. This is not personal data and is not accessible to us.
• Nominatim geocoding: If you search for a city, the search query is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Their privacy policy applies to that request.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, or delete your personal data. Since we do not store any personal data, there is nothing to access, correct, or delete. You can clear your locally stored city preference by clearing your browser's local storage for this site.
